After the phone call I received from a friend yesterday, it has come to my attention that I have been snubbed by the woman in charge of the gift wrap warehouse sale that I sometimes work at.
The same woman who sent me a spitting e-mail when I dared to question the fact that the Inner Circle of bookclub women celebrated the Inner Circle's birthdays while ignoring the birthdays of the rest of bookclub. Sometimes I was included, sometimes I was not. There were quite a few who were totally disregarded. Included or not, details always got shared at bookclub meetings. How's that for awkward?
An e-mail from the woman in charge was mailed to bookclub members back in August containing a paragraph that started the beginning of the Official End of My Membership:
NOTE: we have 3 member birthday's this month! Sounds like a party needs to be planned? Ideas are welcome and I would be happy to organize for the group.
To which I replied:
Can I mention one thing about bookclub birthday gatherings? If we're going to have them for some of the members, we should have them for all of the members or keep it separate from bookclub. I've sometimes had my feelings hurt when I've been invited to a bookclub birthday thing but my birthday is overlooked by bookclub ... We haven't done these types of things for alot of the members of bookclub so I think it can be quite hurtful to those excluded. I'm not saying, don't have the birthday things, just saying that it should be kept out of bookclub business unless it applies to all.
In reply from the woman in charge:
I'm confused by your comment about keeping birthday celebrations separate from the book club. I will take your suggestion to the rest of the book club and ask for their feedback on how they'd like the book club to be handled
going forward. (It's the least I can do for falling down on the job of planning birthday celebrations for club members.)
Makes me wonder just who this bookclub posse is she took my suggestion to because I haven't heard any feedback other than the fact that I am no longer being contacted by any of the Inner Circle at all. However, the Outer Circle has been contacting me, wondering when the next bookclub meeting is. Apparently it's being held in the Inner Circle's Private Book Club Meeting Hall.
Word. Mean Girls grow up to be Mean Women.
Remember yesterday how I told you (except for Lucy, you go - girl!) to not have children?
Today's message: Don't make eye contact with Mean Girls.
The last part of her reply to me was:
Again, I apologize for anything I've done to hurt your feelings and caused you not to attend book club since January. I hope we can remedy this situation and look forward to seeing you again at our meetings as I miss your lively discussions and friendship.
I thought, for a nano-second, that she might just be sincere. Then I came to my senses and pretty much hit it on the head, I've been Officially Dissed. It came Gift Wrapped.
